Will pulls Tristan towards him and they do it. Wolf gets to return back but he’s murdered, according to Will. She tells Tristan about how she used to be engaged but isn’t now. She’s very progressive and hates how women are held back in every way. We go back to Marian and Tristan’s conversation. We’re told Tristan was kicked out of home and despite only being seventeen, enlisted in the army. Tristan falls for him and gets jealous whenever Will is with Wolf. Tristan has a cot right next to Will Bancroft. Wolf, a conscientious objector, is always picked on by Sergeant Clayton and everyone else. There’s a flashback to his time training at Aldershot with nineteen other boys. After checking into the house he’s staying at (after the boy at the front apologises for the previous renter of the room sharing a bed with a boy), Tristan goes to the coffee shop to meet Marian Bancroft. He works at a publishing house as one of the editors. The book starts with twenty-one-year-old Tristan making his way to Norwich. But his secret and feelings get in the way of everything. After getting kicked out of his house, Tristan Sadler enlisted in the army to fight in WWI.
